GardenBox Hydroponics Organic Product Launch About to Launch

Also on Thursday, Natural Grocers unveiled the GardenBox, a program of organic products grown in hydroponics.

As part of a pilot project at the chain’s Green Mountain store in Lakewood, a range of organic leafy greens are being grown inside the “GardenBox,” a 320 square foot enclosure resembling a container. The expedition features a climate controlled by technology to regulate the amount of water, light and nutrients needed to optimize plant growth, nutritional value and flavor.

According to Natural Grocers, up to 4,000 heads of leafy greens can be grown each month, and the full-spectrum LED lights mimic optimal sun exposure to produce green vegetables year-round. Green vegetables are certified organic by Where Food Comes From Organic (WFCFO) and carry the Clean Hydroponic Produce seal of the Alliance for Sustainable Hydroponics.

At the GardenBox hydroponic farm, located in the Green Mountain Natural Grocers store, up to 4000 heads of leafy greens can be grown each month.

A variety of GardenBox lettuces such as Hampton, Brentwood, Alkindus, Tropicana, Muir, Marciano and Truchas will be sold at the Green Mountain store starting July 7, Natural Grocers said. All GardenBox Greens will be priced at $ 1.99 per head.

The durability and quality of GardenBox greens is also enhanced by the fact that live produce is harvested daily and transported from the hydroponic garden directly to the produce aisle, or just 82 steps to customers, noted Natural Grocers.

“Natural Grocers is committed to selling fresh, 100% organic produce from day one as a way for us to support our communities and our planet,” Isely said in a statement. “This next step – sustainably growing organic and clean hydroponic products ourselves on site and harvested fresh for our store each morning – is a real testament to that commitment and who we are as a company. We can’t wait for our hometown community to sample products grown literally outside of our store.
