New content is constantly being added to our popular streaming platforms.

While this is usually a cause for celebration, the sheer number of choices available can sometimes justifiably leave you scrolling through titles, stuck in a “only watch on Netflix” cul-de-sac.

Before you even knew it, it took you half an hour to decide that you wanted to watch a movie that you’ve already seen a dozen times.

However, if you are really trying to find something new, why not go for one of the fantasy dramas or action movies currently listed on streaming sites?

To give you a place to start, here’s a list of eight of the best dramatic movies currently available on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

1917

Shot in a way that makes the scenes completely transparent, 1917 is a masterpiece of a film that stars Dean-Charles Chapman and George MacKay as two young soldiers of the First World War.

They are responsible for delivering the message to cancel an attack on German lines and, in so doing, save 1,600 lives.

Drama, suspense, action. This film has it all.

Available on: Netflix and Prime Video.

A few good men

The first film ever written by legendary screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, The Social Network, Molly’s Game), A Few Good Men may well be one of the greatest court dramas ever made.

Starring Tom Cruise and Demi Moore as military lawyers, they are set to investigate the death of a marine apparently killed in a “code red” incident in Cuba.

Jack Nicholson is the base commander.

This film features everything you would expect from Sorkin – lively dialogue, witty humor, and intriguing plot points.

Available on: Netflix and Prime Video.

Castaway

In one of the defining films of his career, Tom Hanks gives precisely the type of performance we expect from one of the greatest actors in the world.

Cast Away tells the story of a FedEx executive whose world is turned upside down after a dramatic plane crash.

At the very least, those who have been through the various blockages of 2020 will no doubt be able to understand the situation with Hanks’ hair in this film.

Available on: Netflix and Prime Video.

The boy in the striped pajamas

The film tells the story of the unlikely friendship forged by the son of a concentration camp warden and a Jewish prisoner, and yet is unmistakably poignant.

However, the story is told from a very unusual point of view, and there are plenty of actors delivering incredible performances, including future Sex Education star Asa Butterfield, barely ten years old.

Available on: Netflix and Prime Video.

Jaws

Containing elements of both thriller and horror, Jaws is considered a classic for good reason.

A story that is sure to keep you out of the water, Jaws tells the tale of a giant shark that terrifies a small beach community. The town’s sheriff is tasked with tracking down the shark, alongside a marine biologist and an old sailor.

Available on: Netflix and Prime Video.

Apollo 13

In the second mention of Tom Hanks on the roster, Apollo 13 sees him playing alongside Bill Paxton and Kevin Bacon.

This tense drama tells the story of three astronauts bound for the moon until disaster strikes, and NASA must find a way to get them home safely.

The film won two Oscars and was nominated for seven more.

Available on: Netflix and Prime Video.

Philomene

Based on the book The Lost Child by Philomena Lee, the film Steve Coogan portrays the book’s writer, journalist Martin Sixsmith.

It tells the true story of an Irish mother in search of her long lost son. Dame Judi Dench plays Philomena, and the resulting performance somehow manages to be heartwarming, tragic, funny, and terribly sad – all in one go.

The Oscar nominations for the film included Best Picture and Best Writing and Best Performance by a Leading Actress for Judi Dench.

Available on: Netflix and Prime Video.

Irish

Martin Scorsese’s epic three-and-a-half-hour crime drama is a monstrous watch but worth taking the time to stop.

With an incredible cast that includes gangster movie legends like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, the main cast gives very nuanced performances.

The film covers the lives of legends of the Philadelphia crime family Frank Sheeran, Jimmy Hoffa and Russell Bufalino.

Available on: Netflix.
