As Congress debates the FY22 budget reconciliation bill, the country is on the brink of a generational investment to renew U.S. infrastructure. Policymakers can ensure that we ‘build back better’ with cleaner concrete, cement and steel that support the next generation of schools, roads, bridges and office buildings in the United States. United.

Whether federal agencies are looking to build high-performance green buildings, rebuild a road or school after a natural disaster, initiate a sustainable building pilot, make a community more climate resilient, or renovate existing federal buildings , they should seek to do so using low carbon emissions. construction materials. Congress can help cover any small premium by funding the reconciliation bill.

A group of NGOs and businesses sent a letter this week highlighting the opportunity and calling on congressional leaders to provide at least $ 6 billion in funding for the federal purchase of low-carbon materials in the project. law. The letter also called for funding to help industrial manufacturers generate high-quality data on their intrinsic emissions and direct investment to re-equip existing factories and build first-class factories capable of producing steel, cement and steel. ‘other very low emission materials using processing technologies. .

Under the status quo, industrial greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are set to exceed those of the transport and electricity sectors over the decade. At the same time, the materials produced by these industries are essential to modern life and have little or no viable substitutes. Retooling and innovation to deeply decarbonise products and processes inside US factories are therefore essential to our national climate goals. As the largest purchaser of concrete and other building materials for publicly funded construction projects, the federal government has a unique opportunity to create early markets for low-carbon alternatives and drive initiatives. transformative changes in the industrial sector.

Although building materials generally represent only a small fraction of the costs of a total construction project, they are often responsible for most of its GHG footprint. The good news is that the NRDC and our partners believe that with better information on the intrinsic carbon emissions of these products, GHG emissions savings of 10-30% are available at very low cost. The best news is that deep decarbonization (over 60%) is available at a modest price of around 5-12%.

If a buyer as large as the federal government demonstrates procurement power to commercialize these low-carbon materials on a large scale, it has the potential to translate into significant emissions savings. We estimate that if all the cement and steel the federal government buys for public construction were 30-50% cleaner, it could reduce emissions between 9.2 and 15.4 million metric tonnes of CO.2 equivalent (MMt CO2e) by 2030. This is equivalent to removing 2-3.34 million cars from the road or eliminating the energy consumption of 1.1 to 1.9 million households for one year.

The indirect benefits of market transformation would be even greater. Indeed, as more companies embrace cleaner manufacturing processes to compete for the large pool of federally-funded construction companies, those same manufacturers will be selling low-carbon materials to buyers in the world. private market alongside the public sector, dramatically increasing emissions savings.

In his provisions of the Build Back Better Act, the Energy and Trade (E&C) Committee called the purchase of low-carbon materials as a key measure to decarbonize federal buildings as part of a large Federal Fund for energy efficiency managed by the Department of Energy, alongside the integration of clean energy and others.

Elsewhere in its bill, the E&C committee also defined low-carbon materials in a way that federal agencies at all levels can use to move forward. This definition explicitly refers to Environmental product declarations or EPDs – a well-established tool that captures the total emissions incorporated in a final product, such as concrete or steel. Buy Clean programs like the one in California are based on EPDs, which the government can use to assess the average climate performance of the industries covered, or which an entrepreneur can use to assess the carbon embodied in a product or set of products. Wherever the federal government seeks to purchase low carbon materials, agencies should use this definition so that EPDs are the accepted measure for carbon incorporated in all related but separate programs.

Importantly, the E&C committee included $ 250 million in grants to fund the generation of EPD for companies participating in the federal procurement process. This financial and technical assistance will facilitate the implementation of EPDs by manufacturers and help generate essential data to improve visibility on the life cycle GHG emissions associated with a range of industrial products. It is essential that this funding remains in the bill when it passes through Congress and that the Senate make an equivalent investment. Funds between agencies that support the sourcing of low carbon materials should also be harmonized so that suppliers of low carbon materials can participate at all levels rather than facing a patchwork of different requirements. .

We have a unique opportunity to ensure that billions of short-term infrastructure investments – across the range of publicly funded projects – go hand in hand with programs to purchase building materials and industrial construction at low carbon emission. This will not only achieve significant emissions savings, but also support good jobs and American manufacturing.

Peloton Bike and Bike +

The Peloton Bike and Bike + offer live and on-demand lessons, as well as several other features that set them apart from other exercise bikes.

Equipped with digital magnetic resistance and an HD touchscreen for streaming workout classes, it’s easy to see why Peloton bikes are preferred by so many people and considered the cream of the crop.

Besides the price, the main differences between the Peloton Bike and the Bike + are the audio system, the storage capacity and the quality of the camera.

The Bike + also comes with a larger spinning touchscreen, as well as Auto Follow technology, which adjusts your resistance to match that of your instructor during workouts.

In addition, Peloton offers three package options that include additional cycling accessories, such as a bike mat, resistance bands, yoga block and strap, and cycling shoes, which is especially important as the Peloton bikes require Delta compatibility rather than SPD, crampons.

MYX II and MYX II Plus

MYX II Plus

With a sleek and interactive touchscreen tablet, Polar heart rate monitor, access to thousands of course options, and the ability to pair with Apple Watch, it’s easy to see why the MYX bike is a popular Peloton alternative.

Believe it or not, the MYX II exercise bikes are slightly more expensive than the Peloton at retail, although they are frequently promoted on the MYX Fitness website.

MYX offers two bike options: the MYX II and the MYX II Plus.

Although the design of the bike is the same, the MYX package includes a white colored bike, while the MYX II Plus bike is available in dark charcoal and white.

The other main difference is that the MYX II Plus includes additional training equipment for a full body workout including:

  • a 6 piece set of weights with a kettlebell
  • an exercise mat
  • a foam roller
  • a resistance band
  • a stabilizer mat

NordicTrack s22i studio bike

NordicTrack s22i

The NordicTrack Commercial s22i Studio Cycle is a smart exercise bike option that is less expensive than the MYX II and Peloton Bike +.

Yet despite its lower price, the bike is packed with unique features, making it an option that should be on your radar.

In addition to 24 digital resistance levels, it comes with built-in speakers and a wide range of live and on-demand classes using iFit.

It is also one of the few exercise bikes on the market to offer multiple levels of incline and descent, as well as automatic trainer control.

Curious which bike is the best? Read on to find out which one reigns supreme.

Size, weight capacity and material quality

Although they are all about 22 inches (55.88 cm) wide, the NordicTrack is by far the longest of the three bikes.

Meanwhile, the MYX II beats the Peloton as the most compact option.

In terms of weight capacity, the MYX II and s22i support users up to 350 pounds (159 kg), while the Peloton bikes have a lower capacity of 297 pounds (135 kg).

As all three bikes are made with high quality materials, the cheaper NordicTrack s22i stands out as the winner. Still, the MYX II is right behind, as it’s a better option if you’re short on space.

Winner: NordicTrack s22i

Pedals and saddle

While the NordicTrack s22i’s padded ergonomic saddle trumps the standard MYX bike seat, the s22i’s seat is still quite firm and not as comfortable as the Peloton’s ergonomic sport-style saddle.

Likewise, the Peloton has better quality aluminum pedals, but you will need to purchase a set of cycling shoes as the pedals are only compatible with Delta cleats.

Meanwhile, the NordicTrack s22i is equipped with standard toe clips.

The MYX II’s double-sided pedals are the most versatile, as they allow you to use SPD clips or your standard athletic shoes.

Overall, Peloton wins. However, the MYX II’s double-sided pedals are a definite plus.

Winner: platoon

Display screen and speakers

All three bikes are equipped with similarly sized touch pads.

The Peloton Bike + is the largest at 24 inches (61cm) and it rotates 360 degrees, although the s22i’s screen is only 2 inches (5.1cm) smaller and also rotates.

All three have built-in speakers and Bluetooth capabilities for pairing with your workout headphones.

Winner: NordicTrack s22i

Classes

One of the main draws of these smart bikes is the ability to stream courses on their respective apps, including iFit for the NordicTrack s22i, MYXFitness Connected Fitness for MYX II bikes, and the Peloton app for Peloton bikes.

Peloton and iFit are two popular fitness apps, differentiated primarily by the fact that iFit tends to focus more on personal coaching, while Peloton is known to offer better music and a more group-oriented community.

Both apps also have leaderboards that allow you to see your performance and compare your stats to those of other users.

During this time, MYXfitnes Connected Fitness does not offer live or on-demand classes.

However, MYX Fitness recently partnered with Openfit, allowing MYX users to join Openfit LIVE rides. However, you’ll need an Openfit subscription, which costs $ 29 per month.

Another important factor to consider is application compatibility.

Although the NordicTrack s22i is powered by iFit, it is also compatible with the Peloton app. Likewise, the MYX II can be used with MYXfitness Connected Fitness and Openfit.

Peloton is the most limited, as it is only compatible with the company app.

One thing to note is that the iFit Individual plan is an annual subscription that costs $ 180 per year, which comes down to $ 15 per month.

Offering excellent value and variety, NordicTrack is once again the winner, giving you the best of both worlds with the ability to stream from two of the most popular fitness apps.

Winner: NordicTrack s22i

Additional accessories

The Peloton Bike and Bike + base set doesn’t include any accessories, but if you splurge for an upgraded set, you can get cycling shoes, headphones, bike weights, a heart rate monitor, and more.

Meanwhile, the NordicTrack s22i comes with a set of weights and the MYX II offers a Polar heart rate monitor.

The MYX II Plus is the best option if you are looking to fill your home gym, as it includes free weights, kettlebell, foam roller, resistance bands, exercise mat, and stability mat. .

As a result, the MYX II Plus is the big winner with the NordicTrack s22i being a good option in second place.

Winner: MYX II Plus.

Price (including cost of bike, app subscription, shipping and assembly)

When comparing the cost of these machines, it’s important to factor in the price of the bike itself, as well as any add-ons, such as shipping costs, monthly app subscriptions, and required accessories.

Here’s a breakdown of the costs associated with each bike:

Now keep in mind that these companies often offer discounts.

For example, the MYX II and MYX II Plus are currently reduced to $ 1,399 and $ 1,599, respectively.

Likewise, Peloton is offering its original bike for $ 1,495.

Yet even with these discounts, the NordicTrack s22i is hard to beat because you don’t need to invest in cycling shoes, and your purchase includes a free 1-year iFit subscription.

Winner: NordicTrack s22i

Guarantee and return policy

The NordicTrack s22i offers a 10 year warranty on the frame, as well as a 2 year warranty on parts and a 1 year warranty on labor.

The MYX II offers a 12-month manufacturer’s warranty, while the Peloton offers a 12-month limited warranty.

All companies include a 30 day return policy.

Offering the most extensive warranty, the NordicTrack s22i is once again in the lead.

Winner: NordicTrack s22i

When it comes to skin care, there are a few trending ingredients like hyaluronic acid and retinol that tend to be in the spotlight most of the time. But there are others that go unnoticed, improving the health of your skin behind the scenes.

And glycerin is one of those unsung heroes. While you might not always see it advertised on the front of a bottle, you can find it quite high in the ingredient list of many of the hottest beauty products. This is the second ingredient in the mega-viral Peter Thomas Roth Instant FIRMx Eye Temporary Eye Tightener and CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser. But if you’ve seen the word and wondered what it actually does for your skin, you’re not alone. So we sat down with two leading dermatologists to find out why the underrated ingredient is a staple in the beauty world. (Hint: There is a very good reason for this.)

What is glycerin

Much like the powerful and hydrating hyaluronic acid, glycerin is a humectant. Dr Sejal Shah, a certified dermatologist in New York City, said it draws moisture from the environment and deep into the skin to boost hydration. You can also sometimes hear it talking about an emollient, due to its ability to soften the skin, she added. Although it can come from animal sources, the glycerin used in skin care products is generally synthetic or derived from vegetables.

Most often, you’ll find the ingredient in moisturizers, but it’s also added to cleansers to counteract potential dryness, Dr Angela Lambsaid the associate professor of dermatology at Manhattan’s Mount Sinai Hospital.

Apart from skin care, you may also see it on the ingredient list of other things like toothpaste as it can help prevent products from drying out and has a lubricating effect which can improve the feeling. of the formula, Shah said.

What are the benefits of glycerin for the skin?

Because of its moisturizing effects, it can improve the skin’s barrier function and help protect it from irritants, Shah said. It’s also a smaller molecule than hyaluronic acid, which means it can penetrate deeper into the skin. So while you might not see the benefits as quickly, it can provide long lasting hydration.

As an added bonus, it is generally well tolerated and safe for all skin types. It doesn’t tend to cause acne or weigh down the skin, Lamb said.

If you take a look at your favorite beauty products, you’ll probably find that some of them already contain glycerin. But if you’re looking for ways to boost your skin’s hydration, especially before the temperatures drop, here are nine dermatologist-approved products to try.

Aveeno Calm + Restore Triple Oat Serum

Dr. Lamb loves this hydrating serum, which contains ingredients like glycerin and a triple oat complex. Ideal for anyone with sensitive skin, the hypoallergenic formula can help soothe dry skin and strengthen the natural moisture barrier.

Aquaphor healing ointment

Aquaphor might not be the most buzzy product, but it’s a proven staple that can be used to help treat a variety of skin conditions, from chapped lips to dry, cracked hands and feet. And Shah said she generally recommends the ointment (which contains glycerin) to patients.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Facial Gel

A Shop TODAY writer said this dermatologist-approved moisturizer has helped her say goodbye to days of dry skin. It’s an Amazon bestseller and contains two powerful moisturizers: glycerin and hyaluronic acid. “This stuff is amazing on my skin, it’s like a relief to put it on,” wrote one verified appraiser. “It’s not even slightly oily, absorbs almost instantly, and has the lightest, cleanest scent. Other heavier moisturizers left me with tiny clumps of new blemishes every morning (so frustrating), but it didn’t clog my pores at all and my skin felt soft and plumped.

Kiehl’s Ultra Squalane Face Cream

Kiehl’s best-selling moisturizer is recommended by Dr. Lamb. It’s formulated with glycerin and other moisturizing ingredients like squalane and the brand’s Ice Glycoprotein. It can be applied morning and night to provide dry skin with a much needed boost of hydration.

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repairing Face Moisturizer

There are a handful of products from La Roche-Posay that Shah recommends for patients, many of which contain the moisturizing ingredient. And Toleriane Double Repair face moisturizer is one of them. The moisturizing face cream contains niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3 that is said to have many benefits, ranging from reducing moisture loss to minimizing the appearance of dark spots. As a bonus, the cream also offers broad spectrum UVA / UVB SPF 30 protection.

La Roche-Posay Redermic R Eyes Eye Contour Cream with Retinol

She also loves this branded retinol eye cream. In addition to hydrating glycerin, it contains pure retinol and caffeine to help reduce the appearance of dark circles and wrinkles around the eyes.

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser

The cleansing process can sometimes remove some moisture from the skin, Shah said, which is why humectants like glycerin are often added to balance this out. She loves this moisturizing cleanser from CeraVe (she has worked with this brand before), which contains hyaluronic acid, ceramides and glycerin. The cleaner is a buyer’s favorite, with over 50,000 rave five-star reviews, and is endorsed by TikTok.

Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Hydrating Daily Cleanser

Dr Bruce Robinson, a dermatologist in New York City, previously recommended this facial cleanser for people with sensitive skin. “This cleanser contains glycerin which is super hydrating and ideal for patients with eczema, rosacea and psoriasis,” he said.

Almost 2,000 years ago, the Roman gourmet Apicius said: “We eat first with our eyes. He was one of the first to realize that the appeal of a dish isn’t just about what goes into our mouths. Much of our experience is defined by our expectations.

This ancient idea is supported by a number of more evidence-based studies: if a brand can make a prior assumption that it will be tasty, the likelihood that it will be tasty is increased.

For example, in 2006, Brian Wansink, a professor at Cornell University, handed out 175 samples of brownies at a cafe in Urbana, Illinois. Each of the same size and the same recipe. The twist was that customers received their food in one of three different serving styles: either on pristine china, a paper plate, or a napkin.

Making your copy more concrete will increase ad retention

When participants rated the brownies, the difference in taste was obvious. The brownies served on a napkin were rated fair, those on a paper plate as good and those on the china as excellent. And, remember, the brownies were the same; any difference in rating was due to style of service.

Wansink’s study is not one-off, other research shows that a multitude of factors can help boost diners’ expectations, from price to color. In each case, stimulating expectations creates a self-fulfilling prophecy.

When good intentions turn against us

So far, these results might not surprise you. But there is one area where the results are more counterintuitive, and that concerns health messages. An experiment conducted in 2006 by Raj Raghunathan, a professor at the McCombs School of Business, suggests that this could be counterproductive.

Raghunathan invited a group of diners to sample a selection of Indian food and drink. Half of the guests were told that the lassi (a yogurt drink) was healthy, while the other half said it was unhealthy. When guests rated the taste later, those who said the lassi was unhealthy rated it 55% higher than the rest.

It seems that people assume that healthy or diet foods taste worse and as we know this affects the experience.

This finding is interesting because it goes against the behavior of most brands. Normally, they trumpet their nutritional credentials, but this experience suggests that could be wrong.

So what can you do instead?

Well, a 2017 study by Bradley Turnwald at Stanford University suggests an alternative. Turnwald created menus for a cafe that sometimes emphasized the taste of the dishes, for example “Citrus-Glazed Twisted Carrots” or “Dynamite Pepper and Lime-Seasoned Spicy Beets”. On other occasions, he has described the dishes in terms of safety, such as “carrots with citrus vinaigrette without sugar” or “lighter beets with no added sugar”.

He then monitored the effect on sales. Descriptions focused on taste increased sales by 41% compared to those focusing on nutrition.

If you ever take some of the nasty stuff out of your ingredients, the silence could be golden.

Counterintuitively, if you want to sell foods that are good for people, you might want to focus on an entirely different attribute, which is taste. One brand that does it well is Nakd. While health credentials are an important part of her offering, the names she has chosen for her bars, like Lemon Drizzle, Blueberry Muffin, and Bakewell Tart, underscore their forgiving side.

Focus on provenance

Another tactic you might want to consider is provenance. In 2007, Brian Wansink served guests bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon. Each guest was given the same wine, but sometimes it was labeled as being from California, on other occasions, North Dakota – an area not normally associated with high-end wineries.

When asked, those who drank the “Californian” wine rated it 41% better than those who had the so-called “North Dakota” bottles.

This study suggests that communicating details about an admirable provenance may be an alternative tactic to improve your customer’s expectations.

What if being in good health is a crucial part of the brand?

While transmitting healthy messages is essential, all is not lost. You might find a 2006 study by Leonard Lee at Columbia University encouraging. He asked nearly 400 pub goers to taste two drinks: a regular beer and a beer with a few drops of balsamic vinegar added to it. He christened this concoction, MIT Brew.

All drinkers tasted the same beers, but received one of the three preambles. The first group didn’t say anything before their drinks. In this configuration, 59% preferred the MIT infusion.

The second group was told that the MIT brew contained vinegar before tasting. On this occasion, only 30% preferred MIT beer. Participants speculated that adding vinegar would be detrimental to the taste and that’s how they ended up feeling.

Finally, the last group of drinkers were not told about the vinegar until after tasting it, but before noticing it. Just over half of drinkers (52%) preferred MIT tea. By withholding negative information until after consumption, it had no chance of affecting their experience.

From the laboratory to the supermarket

These findings are not just theoretical. Consider Macaroni & Cheese from Kraft, a big brand in North America. She had decided to remove all preservatives and artificial colors from her product. However, perhaps aware of Lee’s experience, he kept the changes silent.

He waited three months, then announced the change in recipe with fanfare, calling it “the world’s biggest blind tasting test.” At this point, buyers had a chance to taste the new recipe without being swayed by their misconceptions about natural flavors.

You can watch the award-winning fun case study in Cannes here.

On some level, Lee’s experience and the Kraft case study suggest that if you ever remove some of the nasty elements from your ingredients, the silence could be golden.

However, on a deeper level, Kraft shows that the greatest value of these experiences comes when combined with a little side thinking. An insight into the science of behavior plus a splash of creativity is the perfect recipe.

The Audit and Oversight Committee approved 43 projects for funding for the federal government’s American Rescue Plan Act. The money cannot be used to reduce taxes or increase the payroll.

By GREGORY BACON

gbacon@observertoday.com

The Chautauqua County Legislature added two new projects to its $ 24.6 million spending plan from the federal government’s American Rescue Plan Act – one to repair a water storage tank in the county’s north and one to repair dam gates near Cherry Creek.

During various legislative committee meetings last week, lawmakers heard again about the 41 proposed projects. On Thursday, the legislature’s audit and control committee finalized the plan, which is due to be voted on Wednesday. On that day, lawmakers can pass the amended plan, make other changes, or reject it and start all over.

During several committee meetings, Norman P. Green of Dewittville, the county executive candidate on the Democratic ticket, urged county lawmakers to restart the process. “There have been no public hearings on the expenses of the Rescue Act. A small, small group of county people assembled only by the county executive met and heard only from county department heads. This money is allocated to the county as a whole and the metropolitan areas of Dunkirk-Fredonia, Jamestown, Westfield and Silver Creek and the suburb of Jamestown have been ignored ”, he said.

His Democratic colleague Chuck Nazzaro, who chairs the audit and control commission, defended the selection of projects. “There was a very organized process for this. Our county executive has appointed a committee. In addition to the heads of departments, there were four legislators above ”, he said. “We had a process. We have met every two weeks. Mark Geise (CEO of the County Industrial Development Agency and County Deputy Director for Economic Development) led the process. We have had volumes of projects. It was a very long task. It is now up to the legislature to examine the projects. “

NEW PROJECTS

The Audit and Control Committee adopted two new projects in its final resolution. The first involved the repair and rehabilitation of the North County Water Industrial District storage tank. The cost is $ 863,000.

The change first came from the Legislature’s Public Facilities Committee, which is chaired by lawmaker Terry Niebel, R-Sheridan.

“This water reservoir serves the North County Industrial Water District, which actually has 13 customers, including Ralston Purina, one of the largest employers in the north of the county,” he added. he said.

According to Niebel, the tank is 45 years old and in serious need of repairs. He recommended that the money come from the $ 8.4 million designated for the Phase II sewer extension on the west side of Lake Chautauqua.

The project was to be considered for funding from the American Rescue Plan Act, but the documents were submitted too late.

The second change was $ 500,000 to repair gates at two of the four dams in the Connewango watershed near Cherry Creek. According to lawmaker Jay Gould, R-Ashville, if the valves are repaired, the dredging will also have to be done, which is why each repair is expected to cost $ 250,000.

He said the valves had not operated for several years and if there was a flood they could not open to protect Cherry Creek from flooding.

Apparently, county officials were aware of the need to replace the northern county water storage tank, but not the valves at the Connewango watershed dams.

“This is the first time I’ve heard of this. I see the value of this without a doubt. I’m just concerned that he’s never done any investment projects (listings) or anything before that, knowing that these valves haven’t worked for so many years, ” County Director PJ Wendel said.

Similar to funding for the storage tank, to cover costs, the committee recommended reducing funding for the Phase II sewer extension. County officials have said they hope they can secure funding for the sewer extension through the possible federal infrastructure funding bill currently being debated in Washington.

CHANGES REJECTED

There were two projects that Nazzaro originally wanted deleted, but they ultimately stuck.

The first project was $ 810,000 for a new snowblower. At the administrative services committee meeting, the director of public facilities, Brad Bentley, said the county has three snow throwers which are mainly used when trucks are unable to push snow. One of the snowblowers was from the 1960s, a second from the 1980s and the most recent from 2002. He was not sure how often it was used.

Nazzaro felt that since the snowblower is mainly used in emergency situations, he wanted to redirect that funding to go elsewhere. The federal government does not allow the money to be used to reduce taxes, so Nazzaro proposed that the money be spent to promote economic development.

Bentley returned to the audit and oversight committee on Thursday and said after speaking to his staff he said the 2002 snowblower had been used eight times last winter and would have been used more if it hadn’t continued to break down.

Bentley said its Sherman staff are using it to reduce snow drifts. If they did not use it, the snow would fall more quickly on the roads. He said a new snowblower would come in handy, not only for emergency purposes, but also for regular use throughout the winter. Due to this new information, Nazzaro agreed with the purchase.

The second item Nazzaro wanted to withdraw was the $ 72,000 to fund a study on essential air service at Jamestown Airport. “I support airports for private, industrial, (and) charter (use). I just think we have to recognize that the days of the Jamestown Commercial Airport are in the past. We were on average six passengers a day. This is just another study ”, he said.

Lawmaker Gould agreed with him. “I firmly believe that we have had too many studies and not enough action” he said.

Bentley defended funding for the study. “This is for essential air service only. … You need this study to request it. You cannot apply without this ”, he said.

Geise also wanted the study to be done. “If it comes back and we find that there is no market, we put it to rest and we are not going in that direction. I think it’s important personally. he said.

Geise believes the last time Jamestown had commercial air service it failed because of the carrier. “They canceled flights and they didn’t provide a good product”, he said.

Wendel expressed support for the study. “We’ve done some studies, but it’s a specialized group that understands what we’re looking for. … Let’s have a final answer once and for all ”, he said.

Lawmaker Niebel agreed with Wendel. “I’m ready to give them one more chance, but that’s it. … This is probably our last shot on commercial flights ”, he said.

Funding for the essential air services study remained in the spending plan. The revised plan now has 43 projects, covering public health, infrastructure, economic / workforce development, drinking water, public safety and miscellaneous. So far, the county has received half of the funding and must have a plan in place in order to receive the remaining $ 12.3 million.

OPINION: Invisible sales can be a gold mine for many businesses and are often “hidden from view”.

They can easily be worth hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars in new profit in your business every week.

Here are three strategies you can use to create invisible sales in your own business.

First strategy: find “new uses” for your product or service

I first discovered the invisible sales of a “new use” of a product or service about 31 years ago.

At the time, I was selling a motivational seminar to help improve performance and productivity.

* We have to be creative to help hospitality

I was chatting with a client who had sent one of their top performing salespeople to this motivational seminar.

He told me he did it because he thought it would be a nice way to express his appreciation for the great job this salesperson had done. (It wasn’t to improve that person’s performance.)

I quickly realized that there were “invisible sales” for our motivational seminar.

These sales could be made to business people with staff they wanted to thank. (It was a very large potential market.)

So I started to explain how this motivational seminar could help business people say “thank you” and show appreciation to some of their key employees.

The end result was new sales every month in a market that I had totally ignored until then.

One of the easiest ways to find new uses for a product or service you’re selling is to talk to your customers on a regular basis.

When you are chatting, ask them “how” they are using your product or service.

The answers will often surprise you and lead to totally new sales that you have overlooked until now.

I read a fascinating story about a baking soda maker whose sales were dropping because more women were working full time and therefore not baking as much.

The baking soda maker surveyed its customers and found that their customers actually used baking soda for dozens of uses that had nothing to do with baking.

They used baking soda as a refrigerator deodorant, laundry detergent, stain remover, and more.

The baking soda maker has created a wide range of brand new products such as refrigerator deodorants, laundry powders based on these reviews. And they’ve made millions of dollars in new sales from these new uses for baking soda.

Many of your customers and customers are a lot smarter than you think, and they can often use your product or service in ways you never imagined.

These new uses of products or services can generate a small fortune in invisible sales.

Action exercise one:

Chat with a dozen or more existing customers this month.

Ask them how and when they use your product or service.

Pay close attention to any new uses they mention that you may not have considered.

New uses of a product or service can often lead to a large number of new sales.

Chatting with existing customers could show you how your product or service is being used in ways you never imagined.

Second strategy: find “new markets” for your product or service

This is very closely related to strategy number one.

Cindy Cashman saw an interesting idea for a new book called Everything men know about women.

The book had over 100 pages and they were all blank.

Cindy liked the fun nature of the book and started looking for new markets to help her sell massive amounts of her book. She ignored traditional bookstores when she realized that her blank book would be competing with thousands of other books for sale.

Instead, Cindy approached businesses like women’s clothing stores and asked them to display her book next to the cash register.

Women who shopped at these stores would pick up the book because of the catchy title, laugh when they saw it was totally empty inside, and then buy copies to give as gifts to other women.

Cindy kept the price affordable and sold over a million copies of her blank book over the next few years.

So, the new market for Cindy in this example was women’s clothing stores.

Often there are whole new markets for your products and services.

And once you find these new markets, they can be very profitable.

Here’s a simple example to get you thinking:

Imagine you own a florist.

A “new market” for most florists is what I call the “delusional fan” market.

In other words, the market is made up of companies that want to turn their normal customers into enthusiastic enthusiastic fans (this is a huge market).

The florist might simply approach local businesses that sell expensive products and services and offer them “enthusiastic fan” service.

In other words, the florist will personally send a beautiful potted plant or a bouquet of flowers to every new customer of one of these companies.

And include a handwritten “thank you card” with the flowers or potted plant in the name of the business.

It would come out a few days after a person made a purchase.

The florist takes care of everything and the company just has to give him the name and contact details of each new customer.

This unexpected giveaway would delight customers and generate lots of repeat customers and referrals.

And once a business saw how well it worked, they used the service on a regular basis. So a new business customer could easily generate dozens of new profitable sales every month for that florist.

While tapping into a “new market”.

Action exercise two:

What are the potential new markets for your product or service that you have not yet thought about approaching?

Strategy Three: Sell your “proven sales and marketing systems” to other businesses.

Marketing legend Jay Abraham was consulting with the owner of a gas station who had a car wash as part of the business.

The gas station was losing money and the owner hired Jay for advice.

Jay discovered that the owner of the gas station was very good at selling car washes.

He managed to get a high percentage of people who bought fuel at his gas station to buy a car wash at the same time.

And a lot of those people would actually buy the most expensive car wash.

Jay told the gas station that his business was not worth keeping because it was not profitable.

However, he told the owner that his system for selling such a large number of car washes was very valuable.

So Jay wrapped up the sales script that the owner of this business was using to sell a lot of car washes.

He then sold this sales script to 1,000 other gas station companies that had a car wash.

These companies all paid $ 500 each for this proven car wash sales system.

Total revenue from the sale of this proven sales system was $ 500,000. And Jay shared that 50/50 with the owner of the gas station.

The good news is that many of us in business have one or more proven sales and marketing systems that could easily be sold to other businesses.

Here is a simple example.

The proven insurance sales letter.

Some time ago, I was chatting with an insurance broker who told me about an interesting four page letter he wrote to send to self-employed workers.

He explained that this letter identified a problem common to many of these people and gave them an interesting reason to encounter it.

This insurance broker told me that he mailed this letter to 96 tradespeople over a four week period and then made a follow-up phone call to each person.

He would mail the letters on a Friday and phone the people he sent them to on the following Wednesday and Thursday.

Of the 96 letters he sent, he created 26 appointments with his follow-up phone call.

And that resulted in five sales producing commissions of $ 19,800.

I immediately realized that this insurance broker had a proven system for getting appointments and making sales.

So I suggested that he make it available to a few other insurance brokers in non-competing fields.

I then emailed six insurance brokers I knew and told them about the success this insurance broker has had with their proven marketing system to trades people.

Five of those insurance brokers agreed to pay $ 297 to have a copy of his letter and phone script so they could use it in their own insurance business as well.

And they made a great investment because now they have something that is proven to work in getting dates and making sales.

The end result was almost $ 1,500 in new sales from the sale of a proven sales and marketing system.

Action exercise three

Take a look at your own business and see if you have any proven sales or marketing systems that seem to work well on a consistent basis.

It can range from a sales pitch that seems to work most of the time, to an email that produces a good number of qualified leads every time you send it.

Once you’ve identified these proven sales or marketing systems, offer them for a fee to other business owners in non-competitive areas and see what they say.

Summary:

There are often a large number of invisible sales in many businesses.

I recommend that you spend a few minutes each week researching these invisible sales.

These may be new uses for your product or service, or entirely new markets for your product or service.

Even proven sales and marketing systems that work well in your business could be sold to other businesses as well.

Although general practitioners have welcomed the news, some fear that a subsequent increase in prices will represent further gaps in access to care.

The flexibility offered by hormonal transdermal patches helps improve access to treatment for women.

The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and the Department of Health have reached an agreement with pharmaceutical company Sandoz to keep menopause treatments on PBS with an updated price to “support a continued and sustainable supply of products”.

The deal follows extensive lobbying from the Australasian Menopause Society (AMS), RANZCOG and the Endocrine Society of Australia, including a letter to Health Minister Greg Hunt in May opposing the removal offered products from October 1.

Hormonal transdermal patches containing estradiol or estradiol with norethisterone are sold under the names Estradot, Estalis Continuous and Estalis Sequi, and offer important treatment options for postmenopausal women.

AMS President-elect Dr Karen Magraith welcomed the news.

“The combined estrogen-progestin patch is the only combined transdermal product available in Australia, and it is vital that this option remains available on PBS,” she said. gp news.

“It is a particularly practical and accessible option for women because it only requires a single prescription and the use of a single product. The patch offers an option for transdermal estrogen which is well accepted by patients in a range of doses.

“Additionally, transdermal estrogen does not confer the risk of venous thromboembolism that oral estrogen can, so it is an appropriate option for many women.”

Dr Magraith said the flexibility offered by the product is an important benefit and can help improve access to treatment.

“Access to treatment is clearly an important issue for many patients, and the importance of the continued availability of a range of treatment options depending on the patient’s individual circumstances is increasingly recognized.” she declared.

‘[For example,] estrogen patches are also used by some transgender patients and continued access is important to them. ‘

GP and women’s health advocate, said associate professor Magdalena Simonis gp news that continued and sustainable access to treatment is “a good thing and very welcome”.

“It has been a very difficult time for women trying to get an MHRT substitute. [menopausal hormone replacement therapy] during COVID-19 and this year, due to supply shortages,’ she said.

“Switching to other products has not always been suitable for women and the options have in some situations resulted in higher overall expenses for women as they have had to stop and try something different multiple times. to get closer to the desired results. “

However, while PBS access to these MHRT products will continue, supplier Sandoz has declared that the price will increase from October 1 to reflect the “increasing cost of manufacturing these drugs.”

Both doctors are concerned about the impact of rising prices on women, especially those on low incomes, and say it further highlights inequalities in access to healthcare in Australia.

“The price increase will be prohibitive for low-income women who do not receive a health card, which, taking into account the gender pay gap has increased by 14% in the last fiscal year, is another blow, “said Dr Simonis.

“It is unfortunate that overall 10% of postmenopausal women require MHRT, and the overall cost for PBS if there were no price increase would be relatively small.”

Dr Magraith had previously warned of the implications of a price increase, which she said is now “unfortunate” and will be noticed by non-concessional patients.

“Hormonal therapy, when used appropriately, is not an ‘optional’ or ‘lifestyle’ treatment as is sometimes assumed, and it is important that patients can afford the treatment that is prescribed for them, “she said.

“It is especially essential for women with early menopause or premature ovarian failure to have appropriate treatment.

“For some women, the optimal treatment may be a transdermal estrogen patch with micronized progesterone capsules, which are not listed in PBS. Taken together, the treatment can be prohibitive for some women.

“AMS will follow the matter with interest.”

It is not yet clear what the proposed price increase will be, but Sandoz’s previous request to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee ranged from $ 7.35 to $ 24 per script on PBS, with private prices as high as $ 30 to $ 24 per script. $ 40 per month.

Dr Simonis continues to raise the issue of gender inequalities as well as financial barriers when it comes to accessing healthcare, citing an example of drug use.

“The issue of gender and sex in older women: Viagra is only prescribed for men and only prescribed for erectile dysfunction,” she said. “Viagra was put on PBS in May 2021.

‘[For women,] Urogenital syndrome symptoms include uncomfortable or painful intercourse and can also affect the bladder leading to cystitis-like symptoms or even recurrent urinary tract infections in older women.

“These conditions affect a large proportion of perimenopausal and menopausal women and for many the only relief is MHRT.

“The decision to fully fund Viagra through PBS while increasing out-of-pocket costs for women who need MHRT is discriminatory.

“The message this sends to the community is that the sexual needs of men are considered more important than the sexual needs of older women.”

1. The dominant view after the Aggies survived the Colorado game was that with the loss of the quarterback King Haynes, almost all of the remaining matches were in play.

After yesterday’s results in which Alabama outlasted Florida on the road (with Georgia Tech playing Clemson in one score and Nebraska playing Oklahoma in a score), things got better because the tide seemed to be deadly and not the juggernaut that they’ve been in recent memory

However, the lesson should be that while things seem to be more open in college football, A&M’s situation has not changed … every game is still on the line and Arkansas and Mississippi State await the Aggies. with Alabama.

This brings us to our next point.

2. A&M and Arkansas have played at AT&T Stadium, a neutral venue, nine times since 2009. Two games (2009 and 2016) were decided by more than one score.

Arkansas has been worse than A&M as a program since 2012, but getting A&M early on they usually don’t know they won’t be very good and it’s still a rivalry game for that fan base and that program. . As a result, they play A&M *** and while the Aggies have won a total of nine straight games in the series, A&M fans always seem to sweat games that go on or come down to the last one. possession.

So I learned that the combination of these circumstances means that I will never take this game for granted again.

3. In 2018, I thought the Arkansas team that A&M faced was the least talented of my life. Bret Bielema ran their recruiting into the ground and they had no speed. By 2019, Chad morris had brought some speed but it did not bring enough size.

They were also in the middle of a three-year losing streak with the SEC, so high-end prospects wanted to know nothing about them.

Enter Sam pittman who accepted the job when no one else wanted it. The offensive career coach had enough credibility in the coaching world to snag some really good coordinators in Kendal Briles in attack and Barry odom in defense.

This story is part of Apple event, our comprehensive coverage of the latest Apple news.

Better cameras for iPhone and faster chips are great, but one of the biggest improvements Apple could make to the iPhone is the addition of a USB-C port. That’s why I’ve been encouraged this week to see signs that Apple may one day make this change.

Apple introduced the iPhone 13 Tuesday with the same old man Lightning port the company has been using it since 2012. Lightning was a good idea then, but USB-C is better now.

Here is what I like about USB-C. It is versatile, an industry standard that increasingly covers the world of electronics. It transfers data at up to 20 gigabits per second and upgrades to 40 Gbit / s with the new USB data transfer protocol 4 just arrived. It charges phones, tablets, PCs and anything that requires up to 100 watts of power, with a 240W upgrade it’ll be perfect for gaming laptops. And there’s a growing ecosystem of USB-C accessories, including hubs, docking stations, keyboards, thumb drives, and memory card readers.

Apple’s proprietary Lightning ports were once universal across its mobile devices. The first signs that Apple wanted something better were when its top of the line IPad Pro got USB-C in 2018 and the mid-range iPad Air got the tech in 2020. This was more easily justified on tablets, which can be used more as miniature laptops than phones and therefore benefited more from USB-C’s ability to connect peripherals such as keyboards and cameras. (MacBook debuted in USB-C in 2015, a move that sparked some grumbling as it removed the beloved MagSafe connector.)

Now Apple is providing clues that USB-C could spread. During its event this week, the iPad Mini has a USB-C port, making the device more powerful and flexible. It will be more difficult to switch from iPhones to USB-C as there are so many Lightning phones and chargers already in use, but it increasingly looks like Apple is preparing its formidably large customer base and product ecosystem to do so. big jump.

Separating Apple product ads is a bit like the Kremlinology of the Cold War: a spy trying to figure out what the Soviet Union was doing by assessing which Russian officials were for or against. Introducing USB-C to some new devices doesn’t necessarily mean Apple is setting the stage for a major change to its most important product line.

Still, I think USB-C is in the future of the iPhone. A big transition, while undoubtedly a big pain, will ultimately be good for you, the iPhone, and the planet. You’ll have less e-waste, the iPhone will be more useful, and landfills won’t be littered with so many cables that only work with a fraction of the devices.

Apple has not commented on this story.

Apple, with the program

Almost every other corner of the tech world has switched to USB-C for data and charging. Android phones started to settle on USB-C ports years ago, and it’s a staple of Windows PCs. The additional price for USB-C accessories is also decreasing.

I use USB-C for external drives, headphones, earphones, flash card readers, two laptop docking stations, a Nintendo Switch and its Joy-Cons, iPad, Android phones, hardware security keys, family Macs, a Microsoft Surface Laptop, and a Google Pixel Slate. I have USB-C chargers in two cars and four rooms in my house. On the road, I use portable batteries with USB-C ports.

The pesky Lightning cable I need for my iPhone is getting more and more out of place. Lightning was a good replacement for the older, bulky 30-pin connector on the iPhone and for older USB options. Now USB-C is a much better alternative.

Apple also sees the benefits. Katie MacDonald, iPad product manager, said Tuesday that the iPad Mini’s USB-C connector is 10 times faster than Lightning and can “connect to a large ecosystem of USB-C accessories.” It’s great for everyone from amateur photographers to medical staff scanning patients with Butterfly portable ultrasound systems.

A USB-C iPhone would also appease Apple’s strained relationship with European regulators wants mobile phones to use the same charging equipment so there will not be as much electronic waste.

If you complete your $ 1,599 iPhone 13 Pro MaxWith 1TB of storage with premium ProRes video, you might appreciate faster technology than Lightning to transfer your data. What if Apple signed up cinematographer Greig Fraser for another iPhone endorsement, he will not have to use it clumsy Lightning dongle on a USB-C iPhone.

Why Apple isn’t rushing to sell USB-C iPhones

With millions of iPhones in use, getting rid of Lightning connectors won’t be easy. Customers have invested in chargers and cables in homes, offices and cars. Lightning is also used in AirPods charging cases and wired Apple headphones.

Switching to USB-C means Lightning gear needs to be replaced. I’m old enough to remember the howls of annoyance when Apple ditched its 30-pin connector, and Lightning is much more established today than the old connector was in 2012.

Lightning has also kept iPhones above the fray for some of the growing pains of USB-C. It can be difficult to tell if a particular cable can handle the full power of USB and the highest data transfer speeds. Some of these issues persist, but the benefits of USB outweigh them.

A transition, if it were to happen, would force iPhone devotees to buy lots of new cables, a prospect no one should appreciate. In the long run, however, it will be worth it. Now or soon, you’ll likely be using USB-C to charge other devices, so switching ultimately reduces the electronic clutter in your life. It will also reduce electronic waste as you would need fewer cables to cover most of your devices. You can always donate your old cables to those who still need them.

How about an iPhone without any ports?

IPhones could go straight from Lightning connectors to no connectors at all. Connectors punch holes in a phone’s chassis that weaken it, expose it to the elements, and increase manufacturing costs.

Wireless charging and data transfer techniques are improving. With Apple’s iCloud, you no longer need to back up and sync your iPhone with a cable plugged into your laptop. The best way to get music from your phone to better speakers is to use Bluetooth, not a phone dock.

The charging and data ports, however, will retain their usefulness. Nothing beats an inexpensive copper cable for fast, private and reliable data transfer. When you only have a few minutes to spare at the airport or in the car, a quick charge will boost your battery better than any charger.

When it’s time to plug that cable into my phone, I vote for USB-C.

TikTok, Instagram – you name it. If you’re on social media and love beauty products as much as I do, there’s no doubt you’ve seen people rave about the KVD Beauty Good Apple Skin Perfecting Foundation. Well, maybe not recently. The product went so viral a few months ago that it has sold out at most retailers – until now.

I’m someone who relies on fast-acting moisturizers and drinks lots of water to keep my skin hydrated, so when I heard about a foundation that wouldn’t dry me out – and help preserve my hard work – I knew I had to try it.

Lucky for me, I got my hands on the popular beauty product before it ran out. Lucky for everyone, the foundation is back in stock. In fact, Sephora is slashing the price by 20% until September 20 – just make sure to use the coded SAVE20 at the register.

KVD Beauty Good Apple Skin Perfecting Foundation Balm

There are 40 shades to choose from

When I buy foundations, I always worry that I end up choosing a shade that doesn’t match my skin tone. This was not the case with the Skin Perfecting Foundation Balm. With 40 shades to choose from, KVD Beauty made it quite easy to find the perfect colors for me: a medium shade for most days, and a tan after spending time at the beach for the rest of the summer in. Florida.

it does not dry out my skin

After hearing about the the full coverage capabilities of the foundation, I was afraid it was too heavy for my skin. But when I first tried the balm-like formula, it gave me solid coverage and felt hydrated at the same time. For the application, I use my trusty beauty blender to lightly pat the product on my face. Trust me when I tell you a little goes a long way, so proceed with caution. (And for $ 38, I’m glad I didn’t have to apply too much.)

The lightweight formula glides effortlessly over my skin and transforms into a perfect matte finish. Not only is it soft on my skin, it melts like a dream without settling into fine lines. The foundation balm is also buildable, so you can add as many layers as you want without worrying about clumping or wrinkles.

Courtesy of Terri Peters

As well as making my complexion look flawless, this foundation is also vegan and packed with nourishing ingredients like apple extract and sodium hyaluronate. According to the brand, these are supposed to help smooth the skin and keep it hydrated.

It gives me the perfect amount of coverage

After applying the Skin Perfecting Foundation Balm, I finish my face makeup with a little setting powder, and I have the perfect canvas to work with at the end of my beauty routine. Even coated with a little powder, the formula still works well with my other products, allowing the liners to glide on effortlessly and the blush to blend perfectly into my cheekbones.

Overall, this rich and creamy formula surprised me. I didn’t expect a product that covers blemishes like large pores and acne scars to be this light. Most of the time I feel like I don’t have any makeup on at all. Plus, the foundation lasts all day without wiping off when I touch my face – an added bonus in the hot and humid climate I live in.

A bad apple can ruin anyone, but this foundation is a great apple that has only improved my makeup routine.
