More pop & rock

9:57 a.m. PST

Apple used to prepare a playlist for its events with hit songs from hit bands like Coldplay to little-known musicians who suddenly became famous in the background of Apple commercials and events. But since Apple started broadcasting its events in the midst of the pandemic, it has moved on to more artistic – what I’ll call corporate classical and pop music.

For what it’s worth, I checked on Apple-owned Shazam to see if maybe this was an artist I had never heard of. No, Shazam didn’t hear it either. At least it’s pretty eye-catching.

Our show has started

Apple’s event is almost ready to begin, and CNET’s live pre-show is now taking place at the top of this page. You can watch it live as we discuss all the rumors and expected products. Also discover the spirit of our excellent reviews.

The fear of spyware

9:17 a.m. PST

While we all wait to see what Apple releases, be sure to take this moment to update your iPhones, iPads and other Apple devices. Like now. Go. I’ll wait.

Apple released a surprise update on Monday that fills a security hole in a report zero click hack. This attack, which is linked to Pegasus spyware allegedly used to spy on dissidents, world leaders and journalists, can be sent via text message. Supposedly, there is nothing you can do to stop it when it happens – the hack takes effect as soon as your phone receives the message. Apple’s update fills that gap.

By the way, you can find out if you’ve been hacked using a free tool available online.

Will there be enough?

9:03 am PST

Previously, when new iPhones came out, people lined up in front of Apple Stores to be among the first to get their hands on the device. It would then usually be depleted and almost impossible to find for days or even weeks. Apple has gotten better at handling demand, and so many people are buying online now that the impressive iPhone lines are largely a thing of the past. But what about the supply?

During the pandemic, we learned that our international supply chains are rather fragile, and our reliance on overseas manufacturing has resulted in shortages of all kinds of products, from cars to video game consoles in passing through garlic. So far, it appears Apple has been able to reverse these issues, in part thanks to its aggressive long-term planning. That doesn’t mean you’ll have easy access to an iPhone at launch, but it shouldn’t be as hard to find as, say, a PlayStation 5.

There are rumors that the Apple Watch may have limited stocks at launch. But that’s because of a non-pandemic problem. Apple was rumored to have struggled to keep production running smoothly in order to produce at high volume.

Unusual location

8:31 am PST

Almost all virtual events organized by Apple so far have been defined its several billion dollars headquarters of the “spaceship” in Cupertino, California. But this time, Apple CEO Tim Cook tweeted a photo of a different location where the company will host at least part of its event: the desert.

It’s a safe bet that this may be a reference to the rumor that satellite emergency call capabilities are said to be integrated in the next iPhones. We’ll have to see.

What we know so far

The most dramatic change for the new iPhones, aside from the best cameras Apple always tends to offer, would be the ability to make calls and send SMS in case of emergency when there is no cell coverage. As a general rule, however, they should always rely on 5G wireless technology for daily connectivity.

The iPhone 13 comes a year after one of Apple’s most successful launches, with the iPhone 12 powered by 5G. The device offered the first major iPhone design overhaul since 2017, when Apple introduced its $ 1,000 iPhone X, with its new face unlock. design and better screen technology. A survey conducted before the iPhone 12 was announced by Decluttr, a device recycler and reseller, found that 53% of those surveyed planned to buy the new iPhone, triggering what analysts call a “supercycle” of phone upgrades.

Apple saw an increase in iPhone sales in the three months following the release of the iPhone 12. In January, the company said iPhone sales during the holidays jumped 17% from the previous year, helping the company to achieve its highest turnover and profits ever.

What to expect at the September Apple event

“It is not far from our minds that this result crowns the most difficult year any of us can remember,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said on a call with investors after releasing the company’s financial results. “It’s an understatement to say that the challenges it posed to Apple as a company are paltry compared to the challenges it posed to Apple as a community of individuals, employees, their families. and to the communities in which we live and love to call home. ”

“These results show the central role our products have played in helping our users meet these challenges,” Cook added.

While Apple is likely to offer a compelling upgrade to some customers, it is happening at a time of turmoil both within and outside the tech industry. For a year and a half, the pandemic forced Apple, Microsoft, Sony and many other tech companies to own online events.

The virus has disrupted the lives of billions of people around the world, forcing entire countries to self-quarantine in an effort to stop its spread. These disruptions have also slowed manufacturing and shipping around the world, exacerbating parts shortages that have delayed production of new computers, cars and video game consoles.

So far, Apple has been able to keep products largely in stock, analysts say, in part thanks to the wise management of its supply chain.

While the iPhone will be a key product we’ll see at Apple’s event this year, and probably what most people are focusing their attention on, the company should have other devices to show. These include new Mac computers with improved chips and new iPad.

When is the Apple event?

Apple’s online event only will take place on Tuesday September 14 at 10 a.m. PT, or 1 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. BST, and September 15 at 3 a.m. AEST. (Sorry, Australia.)

Where can I watch Apple’s live stream?

You will be able to stream the Apple event directly from the company website. We’ll also be covering it with a live broadcast here on CNET.

What can we expect, other than the launch of the iPhone 13?

Apple’s digital events are fast-paced and produced smoothly. And the leaders throw at least a joke or two to keep you entertained. Maybe they’ll even make a joke about moms and dads, but don’t bet on it.
